Link Trading – what you need to know

March 30th, 2009

In the ‘olden days’, most search engine, including Google determined the reputation of a website by counting the links it had from other websites. Broadly speaking, one link equalled a vote of confidence.

Link-based analysis is a useful way of measuring a site’s value, Google still uses it. More important than the quantity of links though, for a positive impact on this rating is the QUALITY of the links.

Some SEO and webdesigners swap, share, buy and even sell links, disregarding the quality of the links (and the sources). Practises such as buying links, with the sole purpose of improving a site’s ranking violates Google’s guidelines for webmasters and can have the opposite effect – negatively impacting a site’s ranking in search results.

Google and, for that matter, all the other search engines dislike websites that try to manipulate and cheat natural listings by using unfair techniques. If you are caught participating, you WILL be banned from Google, and then you will have to appeal, take remedial steps, and start again from a lower position. Is it really worth the risk?

What is the answer?
It couldn’t be easier. Just make sure your website is presented correctly, and embark on ‘Search Engine Optimisation‘ or ‘SEO‘. Write good quality content that relates to your main keyword phrases.

10 minutes or less – we don’t charge

March 19th, 2009

Not everyone wants to update their websites themselves, and that’s fine by us. We’re happy to do it.

Our clients who opt not to update their websites themselves are often surprised when they ask ‘how much a tweak will cost’. Most of the requests we get from clients can be handled in less than ten minutes, including text changes and image uploads. So here is our standard response when asked for a quote:

If it takes longer to raise the invoice than it is to do the work – we don’t charge.

Sure, we do a lot of ‘free’ work for our clients, but we have a word for it… ’service’.

Chester Conference Venue Website Receives Makeover

March 14th, 2009

New Website Launch

Cheshire View is a major provider of meeting rooms, conference room hire, and seminar room hire in Chester.

We were delighted to be invited to give their website a makeover and work on it’s search engine optimisation.

Our experience shows that search engines prefer  lots of good content in lean, compliant code – simple.

The new website features lots of enhancements, (including new content) a new updateable news section, an RSS feed, a newsletter sign up, Google video and Youtube video, new pages, and social networking buttons. We were able to reuse many of the original websites’ features, but widened the layout and gave it’s design a more contemporary feel. Oh yes, we also added in a tiny bit of Flash on the home page.

As we offer graphic design and print design services, we were also commissioned to produce leaflets and banner stands to complement the website.
