Help with the EU Cookie Law

A new law, dubbed ‘The Cookie Law’ came into effect on 26th May 2012, and it affects all websites in the UK.

In a nutshell, all websites that use cookies – small text files that websites save onto users computers – will be breaking the law in the UK if users aren’t able to make an informed choice before permitting cookies to be placed on their pc’s. Website owners can face fines of up to £500,000 for non-compliance.

Here are the three most common approaches that we’ve seen organisations large and small take:

  • Imply consent, a small modification to your web design that adds a simple ‘Cookie’ link at the top of pages, giving more information on the cookies present on the site and how to manage them.
  • Seek explicit consent, disabling all cookies on the website by default, adding a pop up box that seeks permission from users for cookies to be switched on?
  • Do nothing, risking a fine of up to £500,000.

Whatever option you think is best for your website, we can help with implementation. It goes without saying, you should of course seek proper legal advice.
