A new BBC programme, ‘Trust me I’m a doctor’, was filmed in Chester last week. The programme is looking at the effects standing or sitting for long periods at work has on the body.

Staff at Matthews Estate Agents on Lower Bridge Street took part in the experiment. Chester Physiotherapist Katie Copeland was interviewed about how the spine and posture is affected by standing or sitting and how lower back and core muscular activity changes. Katie dropped us the following note: “When I asked the programme director why he had selected me as the Physio he said it was the website and the fact I had the video clip!! Several of my patients have also said that is why they selected me too! Thought you would like to know!”

Lately there have been more and more high profile cases dominating front pages. As the UK’s first Youth Police and Crime Commissioner found out, publicly posted Tweets sent years ago just linger and pop back up to haunt when you really would prefer they were just dead and buried.

How much control do you have of the data you have out there? Very little it would seem.
This week Google announced a new tool, that can give you more control of what happens to your data when you die. It means you can plan your digital after life. Their new Inactive Account Manager – we could have come up with a better name if they’d asked us first – lets you tell Google whether you would like to have your Gmail and data from their other services deleted or ‘bequeathed’ to someone else.

It’s been designed to make life easier for your loved ones when you have passed away, and removes any Youtube videos, Web Albums, Google+ and Blog articles you’ve posted protecting your Privacy.

Using the Inactive Account Manager tool.

You can go into your Google Account, select the Inactive Account Manager tool and select a period of inactivity, choosing from three, six or nine months. When the defined time passes, Google assumes you’ve died and buries your data.

Anything you have posted outside of Google will still be there, of course, so if you want to make sure everything is swept up neat and tidy after you’ve gone, there’s still a lot of work for ‘someone’ to do. That said, Facebook has a Memorialize request facility meaning that friends and family can still post to your wall, or the account can just be deleted along with all data.

Horse meat is on the agenda today as a number of supermarkets have been alerted by food safety officials that horse DNA has been found in beef burgers on sale in some UK stores. As products are withdrawn, inquiries get underway and apologies are issued, the butchers based in Chester Market posted the photo below onto social networks for sharing. We love its simple tag: “100% beef burgers at Geoff Hughes family butchers!”

An opportunity well grabbed and a great lesson in how to use social media.
