Email marketing: A cautionary tale
A client of ours rang today with a major problem. Their emails and web site ended up on a 'spam' blacklist which prompted their service providers to suspend everything. A nightmare. They had sourced a 'triple opted in' email list for their Christmas email marketing campaign and, in good faith, sent messages out to several thousand recipients who fitted their customer profile. Everyone on the list had apparently given their permission to be on it.
The picture I have in my head of a 'spamming' outfit is one that offers up dodgy stuff and get rich quick scams from an unknown address in a far away corner of the globe. Without identifying my client, as you can expect they are both embarrassed to be labelled 'spammers' and gutted to have lost business by being offline, theirs is a reputable business from a bona fide business address in Chester and the product they offer is not what's typically offered up in 'spam'.
Hosting companies have a zero tolerant stance on 'spam' even when, like in this case, you are an innocent party. They have their own businesses to protect, and if their own servers get blacklisted the results for them would be catastrophic.
After a delve into our back ups we helped to get our clients site back up and running with a new web hosting and email provider, and nearly all is well.
So the moral of this story is... unless you are 100% sure of the integrity of any email list for a marketing campaign, steer well clear - or face the consequences.
